AI Didn’t Just Explain My Surgery, It Turned it Into Magic My Children Could Believe In
When I think back on the hardest parts of my heart surgery journey, it wasn’t the diagnosis. It wasn’t the 41 nights in the hospital. It wasn’t the procedures or even the surgeries themselves.
The hardest part was figuring out how to tell our children.
As a parents of two… our daughter 10, our son 8, my wife and I found ourselves preparing for one of the most vulnerable conversations of our lives. How do you explain that daddy has a serious heart condition? That he’s going to need open-heart surgery? That the words the doctors are using: like aneurysm, valve regurgitation, the David Procedure etc are not part of their bedtime story vocabulary?
There’s no playbook for that moment. But as we sat with the weight of it, I wondered—could AI help?
Not to make decisions for us. Not to replace our empathy. But to help translate something overwhelming into something understandable.
When Medicine Meets a Swiftie
Our daughter is a die-hard Taylor Swift fan. If you know a Swiftie, you know they’re fluent in metaphor and emotion. And that gave me an idea.
I opened ChatGPT and typed:
“I'd like you to use Taylor Swift song lyrics to help describe a heart condition so my 9 year old daughter can understand. The condition is a bicuspid valve and aortic aneurism.”
It gave me a playful, metaphor-rich explanation. We anchored on one of her favorite songs: Shake It Off. The AI described how even though a part of my heart (my aorta) was swollen, my heart was still pumping—still moving—still “cruising.”
“Can’t stop, won’t stop moving.”
It was like someone opened a window in a dark room. She smiled. She nodded. The scary medical world faded into something she could hold onto…lyrics she knew by heart.
In that moment, we weren’t just explaining surgery. We were trying to sing through it together.
Jordan, Magic, and a Leaky Valve
Next up was my son. He’s 8 years old, living and breathing basketball. He’s in love with the golden era of the game. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson. He’s got the passion I had at his age, and I wanted to speak his language too.
So I asked AI:
“Id like you to act as an expert cardiac surgeon. You’re familiar with performing valve replacement and aortic root replacement. I'd like you to use a simple basketball scenario analogy to help describe a heart condition so my 7 year old son can understand. The condition is a bicuspid valve, severe regurgitation and aortic aneurism.
Please keep it simple, yet accurate and aligned as closely as possible to the game of basketball. Please use magic johnson and Michael Jordan references wherever possible …?”
And it worked—again.
We talked about how blood is supposed to flow in one direction, like a clean pass to the hoop. But in my case, the valve wasn’t closing properly. The blood was rushing back- just like Magic trying to get a clean shot, only for Michael to constantly block it.
“He keeps swatting it out. The shot won’t land.”
My son’s face lit up. “So your heart’s trying… but it’s being blocked?”
He got it.
And more than that, he started asking smart, thoughtful follow-up questions…on his own terms, in his own words.
That’s when I realized: AI didn’t just help them understand me, it helped them connect with me. It gave them permission to engage, to ask, to be part of this.
AI as a Translator of Fear
These moments weren’t about clinical accuracy. They were about emotional clarity.
When you’re a patient- or a caregiver- navigating a high-stakes medical journey, you’re often stuck in a translation loop. You’re constantly converting what doctors say into what your heart can handle. Then you convert that again for your family, your friends, your children.
And every layer introduces new fear, confusion, distance.
What AI did was collapse that distance. It offered a real-time, empathetic, highly personalized bridge between clinical truth and human understanding. What was amazing was that it did it in seconds.
No meetings. No scripts. Just a prompt, a keyboard, and a father’s desire to be understood by his children.
Infinite Clarity in a Browser Window
But, let’s step back for a second. What does this moment tell us about the future of healthcare?
It tells us that AI is not just for hospitals, charts, or diagnostics. It’s not just for the decision-makers.
It’s for the explainers. The storytellers. The parents, partners, caregivers, kids. The people who don’t need a second opinion: they need a first understanding.
What blew my mind was the accessibility. This was all done using ChatGPT and a browser. Or simply the ChatGPT app. No medical background required. Just questions, curiosity, and love.
The same way my wife, my Chief Caregiver, used AI to manage details about my medications and prepare questions for our doctors, I used it to make sure our kids didn’t feel shut out of what was happening. That matters more than people realize.
Because the emotional journey of a patient is not a solo experience. It ripples outward. And when you can bring people in, truly in, that’s when healing begins.
The Human Side of the Machine
A lot of people talk about AI as cold, clinical and robotic. But my experience has been the opposite. It felt human. Not in the sense of replacing a person, but in the sense of amplifying one.
AI helped me become a better father in that moment. A better communicator. It gave me the tools to show up for my children not with fear, but with clarity. Not with abstract terms, but with metaphors they could really relate to.
That’s what I believe the future patient experience should look like.
Not more complexity. More clarity. More connection.
Not less humanity—but a deeper kind of humanity, enhanced by intelligence that listens, adapts, and speaks your language.

I share this story not because it was a one-off miracle. I share it because anyone can do this.
